Russia-Ukraine War Flash Report - 19 FEB 24 13:00 PST - Russian Defector Killed In Spain
Added 2024-02-19 21:10:20 +0000 UTCRussian pilot Maxim Kuzminov, who defected to Ukraine in August 2023 with a Mi-8 helicopter, was found shot dead in the Spanish village of Villajoyosa. Kuzminov became internationally famous after speaking out against Russia's war of aggression and Ukraine, arranging to have his family exit Russia in coordination with his defection. He was also featured in a September 2023 documentary.
He was found in an underground parking garage after being shot multiple times and was living in Spain as a Ukrainian under an assumed name. Officials say a car left the scene with two people, and the vehicle was torched after being abandoned.
The GUR confirmed that Kuzminov had died in Spain and chose to relocate to the country after he defected.
Spain is a hotbed of Russian counterintelligence and international crime
Spain is a hotbed for Pro-Russian Ukrainians, Ukrainian and Russian money launderers, and former Russian fighters, including Anatoly Shariy, blogger Alex Parker, Yevhen Borisov, Sergei Magnitsky, Andrii Kolpakov, Vladislav Osipov, Peter Levashov, and the yet to be named leader of the Kelvin Security hacker group. In 2020, Spain arrested 23 Russian nationals for "conspiracy to infiltrate public institutions and launder proceeds from criminal enterprises involving murder, extortion, and drug, arms and human trafficking."
The November and December 2022 letter bombs sent throughout Spain have been connected to the Kremlin and the Neo-Nazi Russian Imperial Movement. Spain made an arrest of a 74-year-old pensioner in January 2023 and initially reported that he had acted independently. A search of his home revealed what officials called "a bomb-making factory." The man, who has not been named due to privacy laws, remains in custody after Spanish officials determined he was a flight risk to Russia. Additionally, the Ministry of the Interior of Spain warned in 2020 that RIM was inciting right-wing nationalists to commit acts of terror.
The Kremlin is sending a message
Following in the footsteps of Josef Stalin, Russian President Vladimir Putin is sending a message that traitors, dissidents, and critics are not safe anywhere.
Comments
I see almost more interest in Putin in killing seditious Russians than Ukrainians.
