September Progress

Hello Patrons, here is what I can share for the month of September:

I have secured a footage sourcing deal to acquire 4K scans of STS-41B EVA activity (16mm). I don't have a specific timetable on that but I believe it should arrive in October.

I have done lots of sorting through mission audio and TV, upscaling what works well, and sorting for editing. Some of this material is now available for Patrons, link provided!

I found some pretty good STS-51A onboard film, also available in the link above.

I have submitted a request to the national archives seeking approval to digitize STS41C and STS41G magazines.

I am currently talking with The IMAX Corporation, inquiring into the legal status, location, and cataloguing of on-orbit 70MM material shot by NASA astronauts. I do not expect to be able to use it in this video, but the interest and momentum may get the ball rolling.

Do you remember the following IMAX films:
-Hail Columbia

-The Dream Is Alive

-Blue Planet

-Destiny in Space

Well, they shot anywhere from 3x-5x more than they used, and all of that is just sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere. We don't even know how much of it there is, or what all was captured. I intend to spearhead an effort into trying to recover it, if I can.

Please check out the footage I have already made available, and I will let you know when the 4K STS-41B spacewalk footage comes in.

Sorry for the delay. My cousin works for the BBC and she hasn’t responded to my request yet. The only question I have is whether you would have the rights to use that coverage?

Recently came across your channel. What an absolute gem. I wanted to show my gratitude by signing up for your patreon. Great great work.

Hi Jackson, it's great to hear about your new project. I used to own all of the nasa imax films in one box set. Unfortunately the said has been lost overtime. I saw all the films that you mentioned above in my local imax theater, they were all great. I hope you get to digitize the rest of the imax footage, and have good luck with the National Archives. Thank you for all the extra footage, and pictures there will be great in my personal collection. Can't wait to see your next masterpiece, I have enjoyed your work for many years best regards Jim

Sounds intriguing…I’d like to know more! I definitely have gaps in my TV coverage that they might have.

Have you contacted the BBC. They have some open source video of some of those missions. I have a colleague over there who might be able to help.

Great plan with regards to IMAX footage, best of luck with it as there has to be some great material there.

Thanks for the update Jackson! Great footage! I always thought Bruce McCandless’s “heck of a big leap for me” was while he was away from the orbiter. I can’t recall now why I thought that - maybe it was When We Left Earth. Great series, but they did alter things occasionally. Good luck with the IMAX folk - I can see no reason why they shouldn’t provide access if they have no intention to do anything with it. Thanks again!
