Oquonie re-build for Uxn

For the past 3 winters, Devine & I have agonized over the fact that Oquonie was still reliant on Electron.

Every year we'd ask ourselves if it was possible to re-write it, and to re-build it without any dependencies. Uxn is still very new to us, it took some time to learn enough to gather up the skills and confidence to attempt a more complex project like Oquonie. For a while, we weren't sure if making larger games would ever be possible on it at all.

In early January of this year, armed with a few new tricks, we decided to give it a shot.

Now, over a month later, Oquonie is almost fully ported to Uxn, and it looks AH-MA-ZING...! We feel it important to say that we couldn't have taken this incredible leap forward without the help of our many contributors(fantastic people who are so much smarter than we are).

Oquonie and how it would look on NintendoDS

The style translates so well to pixel art...! Rek re-drew all of the assets of the game in 28 days. A re-build also gives us time to re-visit the music, puzzles, and to improve on them (like the very last puzzle). We also took the time to hide a few new secrets ;)...

This is an important milestone for us, it shows what Uxn is capable of. More exciting, is that this will be the last time we'll ever have to port it to anything, ever again.

Already, Oquonie is playable on the Nintendo DS, and soon on the Playdate.
Devine is working on the music right now, and we're fixing bugs. We hope to release the game(again) next month, almost 10 years after it was first released.
We also plan to do a write-up of the development story of Oquonie :)... to throw some context into the 6-year detour we took to free this game of proprietary languages and ecosystems.

See a little video (Mastodon) of the game in action.

As always, thank you for your support <3
