Omg I’m very late to this ep but same!! I was so confused last year when Paul was dating Phoebe Bridgers 😂😂

RJ

Omfg Ariana totally got a crush on Ethan bc his character, once this wraps up I think they’ll break up more so her break up with him.

Megan

Thank you for being so brave! People who haven't been through it never understand how hard it is being in a red area or has family that just doesn't get it. I would try to keep as many personal relationships as you can without sacrificing your comfort, because you might feel inspired again to eventually keep trying with them. I feel like the best thing I did was tell myself I'm not going to fully give up but I'm going to be very tactful and limited about when I engage.

Kris Lynn

From my limited understanding of why we keep it, it's basically to keep middle America happy. We have a huge population distinction between the cities and the rural areas. And this is uniquely an American problem because we are such a large land mass. If we went just by the popular vote, it would be a few cities and the east and west coast of the nation that decide every election. There would be whole states who really didn't matter in the vote because they don't have a major city. And people who live in rural areas already feel disillusioned by our government. So it's tough because I see both points of view in favor of disbanding and keeping the electoral college.

Kris Lynn

Political scientist disagree, but I was always taught it's a democratic republic. Or even a just a republic. It's not really a democracy.

Kris Lynn

Omg I've been confusing Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal all this time 🫣🫣 This episode has cleared up so much for me 😂

Brittany Lancon

😂 appreciate your thoughts and your humor always Shannon!

Davis

I have the same inner monologue and it makes me sad bc I love fashion but I don’t give myself the chance to be fashionable because I’m so worried about looking bad or being bloated from anxiety and being uncomfortable.

Emily W.

Will gladly do that hahaha thank you 🫶🏻

Mellloo

Sending you good luck for the vote! Hopefully you all will see how scared the non trumpie US citizens are and try to avoid our fate. If you all get things sorted out, you'll need to post a how to guide for moving to Germany because we may need it lol.

Kris Lynn

I appreciate your different perspective! I get why abortion seems like a right that privileged white ppl would worry about, but that's not historically true. Rich families will always be always be able to send their daughter over states lines for an abortion. If a doctor says no because it's not a medical emergency, s rich person can keep going to doctors until someone will. It's impoverished women who will face the most consequences due to the lack of resources, not being able to take off work, etc. Also, it is proven that when abortion is restricted, infant and maternal mortality goes up. And that impacts black women at much higher rates due to a number of reasons (doctor bias is a big one). So abortion rights are important to me as a woman, but not because I will be impacted (even though I could, but it's not likely). It's trying to stand up for those who will be hurt and likely die. And as you probably also know, abortion used to be legal in Iran for several decades. Taking away access to abortion goes hand in hand with the subjugation of women, as was exemplified with Iran. Forced birth is part of keeping women in their place. These people (the extremist, not all republicans obviously) really think the god given role of a woman is to protect their child, whether it cost then their life or not, or whether it was rape or not. That's why we are scared. Because of Project 2025 and the right wing agenda, we know for a fact this is just the first step. They outline exactly how they want to go about it. You can use AI or even google to read the sections specific to abortion, but it is disgusting.

Kris Lynn

I went to a Kacey Musgraves concert and she made a lot of hints at it. She got emotional singing "Follow Your Arrow" which has queer themes. She was so comforting about it.

Kris Lynn

Please reconsider future Hopi titled and based episodes 🙏🏽 as indigenous and taught by Hopi, one thing they do not tolerate is use of their religion and beliefs outside their community. It is considered highly illegal and offensive and some parts of the episode especially with the casual mispronounciation felt a little wrong (to me). No harm intended I love your content and just offering food for thought for peoples that are highly sensitive to exploitation 🙏🏽

Mel Mendoza

I’ll count on you to keep me in check once I start burning my bras live on TikTok hahaha

Shannon McNamara

Omg that suuuuucks. I also was extra disappointed cos I really thought she was actually gonna win

Erin

I didn't think of this actually. It's like not fully a democracy

Erin

Girl women have died of miscarriages in Texas, you think they could have got to another state in time when they were dying of sepsis? Of course Iran is so much worse and I'm sure US women are grateful it's not that bad but seriously you're doing a "could be worse" right now?

Erin

Please help me make sense of the following things, genuinely asking: 1. Hormone therapy for children is actively happening. Children 15 years old going through puberty blockers and hormone therapy aka “gender affirming care” - and then coming out that they were pressured into it when they were really just a confused kid needing guidance. 2. This attack on mothers when the left wants forced vaccinations and to charge women crazy $ for having babies and the right is requiring IVF to now be covered, parents will have more choice when it comes to vaccines etc.

H

I saw a tweet with 3.5 likes asking if anyone else woke up at 3 am and just knew. And apparently there are tik toks saying the same thing.

Kris Lynn

The hormone therapy/sex changes for people under 18 is so minuscule. Even if you are against that, it is the right that is constantly making it a topic of debate. They are using it to scare parents into voting for them.

Kris Lynn

bots for sure

margar

As a European, watching you guys ;aka half the county, not you specifically) electing trump is truly disheartening. Like you, we are also experiencing a right wing shift in politics. This election will also have a big impact on us. In Germany our chancellor fired our finance minister and thereby dismembered the ruling coalition, and we will probably vote again in January but maybe even earlier. I fear that our right wing voters will feel emboldened by trump being elected and that we will also have a hard time in the future like you guys. We are in this together

Mellloo

Aw thanks for voting for women to die of miscarriages

Erin

I am getting the impression a lot of your current political discussions are tainted by your current relationship. You’ve talked about your past bf who was red pilled and toxic and now how your current dude is great and extreme lefty. To me your natural state is slight left of center but it seems like you are idk…embellishing or leaning overly hard into the progressive thing this year to align with your partner. I do think these really are your views like pro-choice but some of the talking points and tone strike me as put on. I get that views can evolve but I just want to make sure you are staying authentic to your own beliefs at the same time. I would tell my own friends this same thing and mean this to be constructive and not mean. Happy to be wrong if you feel I’m off base here, just a friendly check to ponder with yourself :)

Davis

That night i literally had a vivid dream she actually won and when i woke up i was so heartbroken.

Jessica Oliveros

Do you get all your information through political attack ads or something?

Alex

The left made me turn away completely in the past 4 years. Will never understand allowing hormone therapy for children, forced vaccinations, open borders, etc. the left needs to get it together because hella people ran away from their own party and voted trump.

H

It is really hard. I just hope any little thing any of us can do can provide some hope. Volunteering at the women’s shelter and donating is amazing ❤️

Jess Thomas

Abortion is healthcare and bodily autonomy and a human right . It is under threat as it always has been in the U.S. and other nations. It affects 50% + of the population. It is tied into reproductive health and the choices those with female reproductive organs get to make over their bodies and the course of their life. As soon as they repealed roe v wade they also set in proposed legislation for contraceptives. The U.S. also sucks at sexual heath education and women’s healthcare in general (especially for lower income and people of color). The tactic of our Christian fundamentalist roots in this country is to control women through reproduction, sexual shame, and a disregard of our mortality. I live in a blue state, in a privileged body, with a job with good health insurance - but you better believe I am scared for those not in that position in our country and beyond. And if we let it slide here or view it as a privilege of white women to care about - many other rights get attacked and many others never get a chance to be put in place. They want to take more things - they dismantled affirmative action, they have not ratified ERA, they are looking at gay marriage. When we’re not standing together they take. And this country is only beginning to reconcile our past. We may have more freedoms than other countries, but make no mistake your rights tend to depend on your gender, color, religion, orientation, body, and unfortunately what state you born into. They felt comfortable taking from 50%+ of the population! It is not guaranteed in this country nor has it ever been - not by a long chance. Our reproductive freedom and choice are tied directly to quality of life, security, safety, education, and economic success. They are telling us we are not equals and not qualified to make decisions over our bodies. It is a big fucking deal. And honestly I am ok if this is the issue that gets white women to wake the fuck up and get political beyond their sphere. We learn through story telling and right now the stories we are hearing are about rape victims having forces births, women miscarrying bleeding out, women faces prosecution for taking abortion medications, and absolute tragedy. Those are all lives deeply harmed and lost, which becomes generational. How are we ever going to have healthcare for all or many other rights, if our Government doesn’t think we have the right to our own bodies? And if the U.S. - the “free” country - is doing that to its citizens , what does that signal to other countries in the world?

Jess Thomas

People are so polarized it would be almost impossible to change the Constitution since it would benefit one party over the other. A change would have to be proposed by 2/3 of the Senate and House of Representatives, and then approved by 3/4 of the states. :/

Alex

So we can’t be pissed off when rights we had for 50 years were walked back in the blink of an eye? We can’t be pissed off because women are bleeding out when doctors are too afraid of being arrested to provide life-saving medical care?Have a broad view all you want, that’s probably beneficial. But it doesn’t make what’s happening right here, right now less urgent or harmful.

Alex

Shannon! Thank you for your thoughts, commiseration, and validation. It’s what a lot of need right now- to take these moments of sorrow and just feel it. But I am all for the hope - which we can do from actions. Let’s make a chat about what we can all do locally , organizations to support, and talk about our actions (even if tiny). I do not want to be consumed by pessimism and hate (because how do we keep going?). And I’d rather be a woman in America 2024 than a woman in America 1960. First we learn and share, then the laws and big changes follow. This is a painful growing process and it’s always been this way when the social world is reshaping. The civil war era of our and the 1960’s are excellent historical examples. And unfortunately, Trump and his slimey ghouls are demonstrating loudly what we still need to bleed out. I work in a rural community as an RN - which let me know Trump has a strong grip sometimes out of hate, but largely out a fear. I am not justifying a vote for Trump - but giving into hate makes him and his more ground. I think as we saw in this election. So let’s get out there even if it’s volunteering for one hour a month somewhere, make more connections, and get offline. ❤️

Jess Thomas

When you asked if anyone else had woken up at some point early Wednesday morning, I got chills. I woke up around 4-5 am with awful anxiety (and I think I was having a dream about Trump). I knew.

Christine S

go look up the electorate of alabama and stop running your idiot mouth you naive tool. it’s disgusting you’ll belittle the struggles of innocent queer people and sick people as “idk i guess they should vote!” they already voted you clown they’re outnumbered 100 to 1 by freaks. how dare you make light of their plight.

Jessica

Oh that makes so much sense now. Thank you for your answer. And also, don't give up without a fighter. Revolution isn't made with kindness, unfortunately 🥺

Thai

But that's it, if it's not the candidate with the most votes who wins, is it a democracy? And I know I'm simplifying something that is VERY complicated, and I'm not an expert on US politics in the slightest, but wouldn't changing the constitution be a good thing? I'm from Brazil, which is a continental country, and it works for us. Your vote literally counts because someone has to have 50+1% votes to win, you know? Also, this comes from our last better and sick bitch constitution (I'm so proud of her💕) in 1988, because we went through dictatorship and literally fought to regain democracy haha. That's why I'm saying that maybe changing the constitution is the answer...? But again, just throwing things, not an expert. My heart hurts for you because in 2018 we had our “Trump” here and THANK GOD here he is legally ineligible now! Sorry for the long message 🤭

Thai

“president trump” i hope shannon bans your alt right ass.

Jessica

how rich are you that you think people can just quit jobs and up and move to a more expensive state? pls my poor disabled sister and her trans boyfriend are dying to know how to easily get out of alabama. are you paying for it?

Jessica

TN here. It’s so disheartening casting my blue vote in a sea of red. The hate here is overwhelming. I’ve cried, disassociated, and tried to reason why. It’s disgusting the things I hear and read. I have unfriended about 40 people already but it’s impossible to escape these people in reality especially when it’s your family. I really hope things change but in the south it doesn’t seem likely.

Savannah Walker

"actually it's ok that black women are dying in America because women have it worse in the middle east" lmao ok freak do you hear yourself?

Jessica

"white american are so dumb for being upset at losing their right to bodily autonomy" how about get fucked. it's not just white women suffering here and guess what white women still deserve rights even if they're white. damn you sound racist as hell tbh. you're ok with black women dying because they're dying in America and not Afghanistan? pull your head out of your ass women EVERYWHERE deserve rights.

Jessica

also it's insane to think "12 week limits" are ok. the women DYING from lack of abortion care are further along than 12 weeks. how about stop being ok with the deaths of innocent women just because they're american.

Jessica

you sound like you have a lot of privilege over the women who have DIED (mostly black women) due to lack of abortion care. you know. since you're alive and running your mouth and they're fucking dead.

Jessica

it is absolutely not "totally possible" for everyone to just up and move don't be stupid. 57% of Florida just voted in favor of abortion and they're still not going to have it. let's keep our ignorance to ourselves in dire times like this.

Jessica

America is gerrymandered. Voting districts are split up to benefit republicans. The senate gives 45 people in Wyoming the same power as 3 million people in los Angeles. our country is rooted in slavery and the constitution was designed to keep slave owners (white, southern, and rural) represented and in power. the country is broken. but yes we will still fight.

Jessica

I agree with parts of what you’re saying, but I think “if access to abortion is your primary concern you’re living a privileged life” is something I really disagree with. I’m absolutely privileged to be in Colorado where abortion is legal but for women in Alabama and Texas and other states, their lives are at risk if they are unable to get abortions. I also don’t consider abortion a “privilege” I consider it a RIGHT of our own bodies that was taken away from us when Roe v Wade was overturned. I know and recognize that women in other countries are dealing with problems 100x worse, but for us right now in America this is still an incredibly devastating moment. I also simply don’t trust what Donald Trump says since he has a continuous history and reputation for lying, so his promises of 12 week limits for abortion pale in comparison to his actions with the Supreme Court that led to Roe v Wade being overturned

Shannon McNamara

As someone who listens to news in five different languages, I approach issues with a broader perspective as an immigrant and minority in America. Often seen as the “weird foreigner” by white American women, I’ve come to value this, as it’s led to friendships with women from all walks of life who have faced truly difficult circumstances. If access to abortion is your primary concern, you’re living a privileged life. Many people in America struggle with basic necessities, yet political debates often focus on rights that aren’t genuinely under threat here—abortion, for instance, remains and will remain legal in the majority of states. President Trump, in fact, supports abortion up to 12 weeks; you can find his stance on this online. Meanwhile, my sisters in places like Iran and Afghanistan have had their rights completely stripped away—they can’t even speak or show their faces in public. For us, coming to America represents real freedom, something that may be difficult for some white American women to fully grasp. Stepping out of our echo chambers reveals a much bigger picture, and I encourage you to broaden your view to understand the global context of these issues.

MJ

no something is definitely off. we saw nonstop stories about record turnout only to have 20 million fewer votes? plus him telling his followers not to vote because he has a little “secret”

shartsimpson

As a healthcare worker and mother of a daughter, I have been devastated and empty since roe v wade. You only have to look at Afghanistan in the 70s to understand the threat Christian nationalism is on our country. It will take decades to reverse the damage. I recommend everyone listen to the pod strict scrutiny to follow how the Supreme Court is dismantling our democracy with impunity. I would LOVE a deep dive on the justices from you! Especially Alito (his mommy vendetta) and Clarence Thomas.

Mary Allen

I woke up at 3am & had trouble going back to sleep. I was also too afraid to grab my phone. It felt like a switch was clicked

Valerie

This is a genuine question from someone who is not American and has a totally different electoral system (example: paper voting is crazy to me), why don't you guys try to fight to change the legislation? I mean, if what counted was the number of total votes and not by delegations, wouldn't the results be different? Maybe better? It would definitely be easier in my opinion. Honestly, I don't think this election is a correct reflection of your people, there are sensible people and not bigotry on usa. I hope you are safe and have the strength to fight for the next 4 years 💕

Thai

I live in GA in an extremely red area. I think all women just feel so empty right now, my boyfriend and I are both looking into moving into a blue state. I definitely am more motivated than ever to get even more active in my community. Just scared for the dark times ahead 🥺

karisma calhoun

also how did so many fewer people vote this election than last???? absolutely seems suspicious. after covid, january 6, his 34 convictions, he could not have gained support

Kendall Heldt

i think he won because so many young white guys who haven’t voted before have been pushed so far to the right that they probably got out and voted for Trump when they otherwise wouldn’t have voted at all

Kendall Heldt

omg yes i woke up around 3 am (CST) and it was so weird

Emily Chisholm

I woke up at 4 AM and immediately knew. I fell asleep early the night before. I do feel empowered to get involved in my community more now. We are all we have!

Sammi Scissors

I saw that from Olivia last night! I love her so much

Shannon McNamara

Disassociating right now, so I will make my election thoughts known at a different time. But I love how you respond to the accusations of Olivia and Taylor beef. It’s like I don’t want them to have beef, I would love if they were getting along and we could have Olivia popping up on tour or something like that, but the truth of the matter is there is beef. Whether or not I want it to exist doesn’t really matter. I hope one day, they can move past it, but I don’t care if they do because it doesn’t affect whether or not I can enjoy both of their music

Corinne Huntley

I don’t have socials so I have to tell you here- Listen to the Confessionals podcast episode 532: Mothers of Darkness. It’s about the occult and she mentions Elon, Gloria Vanderbilt, J and Beyoncé. And ep 530 is a woman talking about Russian human trafficking and how she survived mk ultra. It’s fascinating and terrible I think you’d really appreciate it.

Ciara

great episode! sabrina apologized to women at her shows, billie i think did too, and olivia took deja vous off tiktok because trump supporters were using it to celebrate and said something like “ew this song is not for you never use it again ty”

Jessica

I’m clinging to the astrology girls for hope too, but more that everyone is saying their intuition knows it’s not right & I feel so validated. I lost trust in myself 😥 plus that everyone else woke up around 3am, I feel like we have a collective consciousness

Averie

Shannon, this was really thoughtful and well said. I’m a licensed clinical social worker in private practice primarily working with kids/teens with anxiety. One thing that I say to people is to think about a circle of what they can own ( what are the actions, steps etc) vs what is outside of that circle that is not able to be owned/controlled . This can be done on paper too. It’s simple but I think helpful when trying to navigate uncertain, anxiety provoking times that lead us to feel not in control. That’s all I have that’s coherent to share for now lol. I’m exhausted. Us helpers will show up no matter what and no matter who even if they vote against their best interests and face negative outcomes as a result

Meg Hall

Omfg I pulled over (safely) to type this WTF I WOKE UP AT 3:30 AM AND FELT THE SAME WAY???!
