Episode Discussion - What Industry Plants Are, And Why Chappell Roan Isn't One

Leaving a discussion post for anyone who wants to chat about today's episode!

Also - will speak more on this on this week's Patreon, but I can't thank everyone enough for being so supportive regarding the Enty episode. You never know how "drama" episodes are going to be received and everyone was so understanding and reading through all of your thoughts and opinions on the situation was really enlightening and I just can't thank you enough. Huge thank you to Cam as well for coming on for two hours!

Hope you enjoy this week's Patreon episode in a few days :)

Shannon, I saw a reel that has just Chappell vocals on the Olivia song you mentioned. Your IG dms and tags are closed for me but lmk if you want me to find it in my likes and post it here!

Totally not related at all, buuuuut remember that episode that you did about bots? Could you talk about Spotify and Megan the stallion, & how she lost 30 million in streams cause it was allegedly bots? I feel like this is sooo up your alley!

Melissa E

wait what?????

Thai

Unrelated: but there’s an uglies movie on Netflix??

I’m not sure if I totally believe the Spotify thing. The thing I do enjoy with Spotify and Sabrina Carpenter is they are sponsoring her tour and are giving actual listeners the ability to snag tickets first. I think that pretty cool. Although I don’t really care for “pop” music I listened to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess back in November and I was smitten with it, but wow has her star risen tremendously since then.

Kristin Rose

I think she's guna help us get out of clean girl esthetic and back to fun stuff like kesha esthetic

Rose Martine

i’ve found that even when i make sure to loop my playlist spotify still randomly decides to play other music? 😀 it’s so irritating

Savannah Martin

Unrelated but “shartsimpson” is immaculate

Pump Pumptini

Yess, she don't need you jack

Erin

The espresso, good luck babe and please please please combo always gives me a whiplash. As I’m writing my thesis, I’ve been only playing calm music playlists (instrumental or folk), and I am annoyed every time I forget to loop them. I don’t understand why can’t Spotify just play something similar. Seems weird for their business, so I don’t think it’s “playing the most popular songs” for no reason, as some people have suggested here.

Ildze Jakunova

So interesting to learn about the incorrect stereotypes of America (as a non American)

Erin

I’m also convinced Chappell did backup vocals on some Sabrina songs cause it just sounds like her!! And I hope Jack stays so far away from her oml I love the 80s vibes I don’t want him mucking that up 🥴🫣

RJ

Also I feel like Spotify just pushes songs that blow up on Tiktok like I couldn’t stand espresso and then I listened on a loop and started liking it because the ear worms had landed lol

RJ

I came across Chappell a little over a year ago before red wine supernova dropped and I could tell at that point that she has *it* There was definitely part of me who knew people would react poorly to her after she grew past the mostly queer audience who got it. I’m still annoyed at myself for not trying harder to see her tour last year cause I don’t think it’ll be the same since she’s blown up 😭 I’m happy for her and I hope the industry doesn’t steal her spark!!

RJ

I think “industry plants” are kind of a thing… like Travis Scott had fake streams on SoundCloud and bought followers on Twitter. So in theory, you could fake some amount of popularity, then have algorithms push your content, have really good PR, etc. I still think you have to have some sort of star quality to reach a certain level or maintain popularity. But then I guess my question is who is planting them in the industry and why??

Ginny

knowing that Chappell grew up in a tiny town and worked her ass off doing music and working normal jobs for years just makes it so much cooler that she's had this huge success. not only are her songs great but her voice and stage presence are unreal. i literally flew to ohio to see her concert recently and have no regrets lol. if you get a chance to see her live, DO IT

shartsimpson

How did I not know my kink is karma? This song is a freaking bop!! I love it. It's on repeat. Thank you for the recommendation! ❤️

Problematic Bestie

Chappell Roan has explicitly said that she’s a lesbian. She said so in one of her shows and in interviews. You can look it up on google or tik tok to see the clips.

Paula Andrea

i definitely think people have lost the plot when it comes to “industry plants” and “nepo babies” like i saw someone on twitter saying that they liked gracie abrams’ music but they realized she’s a nepo baby so now they don’t want to support her anymore. my ideology is… who cares! listen to whoever you want to. sure it’s nice to know a person’s background and how they got to where they are but you’re allowed to like someone even if they ~had it easy~ like who cares 😭

Savannah Martin

I think the Spotify algorithm is total trash for the completely opposite reason - I want it to introduce me to new music based on what I have been listening to. I already know how to listen to the songs I know, show me songs I don't know that are like The Wiggles, like Miley, like The Struts, etc. ... I also know who Taylor Swift is, and if I wanted to, I would. I do not need every suggested song to be hers (or any, for that matter).

Zoe Reinus

Meghan Trainor has to be an industry plant. Has anyone seen her new dog mom fresh pet commercial?? How is she still famous lol

Kayla R

I’m probably the most horrible Spotify customer. I never listen to their curated playlists like weekly release radar, top 100 pop hits or whatever. I just use the app to check up on podcasts or listen to Britney Spears and Lana Del Rey 😂

Angelyca Violet

I was a little familiar with her because my besties, who are lesbians, have raved about her for about a year or so!

Angelyca Violet

This was fun! Same fave song 👏🏽

Sophie Cowie

the first time i listened to my kink is karma i was literally flabbergasted because it described my breakup to a tee (my ex was talking to teenage girls and then his life went downhill after we broke up and he had to move home)
