Trending Conspiracies - Cashless Societies, Seed Oils, Poison Receipts

Aha so embarrassing, sorry guys, I did the wrong audio file haha. I have a wet mouth lol so when I record I take breaks to like swallow, and accidentally uploaded the recording with all of those swallow pauses still in there. This one should be the audio without that!

We cover:

Cashless societies - are we moving to a place where no bills and coins will exist? Why would that be so dangerous?

Seed oils - right wing conspiracy, or something we should be on the lookout for with our health?

Poison receipts - it turns out most grocery stores use BPA in their receipts...just how bad is this?

In case anyone is curious how Canola oil is made, I saw someone post this on IG. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfk2IXlZdbI

Have you ever heard of the YA book Feed? I read it in like 2006 so I don’t know if it holds up but it’s all about this

Kate Hofschield

It’s part of some asian culture to give red envelopes 🧧 filled with money during big events including new year.. cashless society would take away this tradition!!

Just being a biology nerd because i love this topic: Our evolutionary ancestors were mostly frugivores (ate fruit). They DID eat meat as well - one theory of why our brains developed so much is because of a high-protein diet *in comparison* to closely related species (ie carnivorous mammals still ate much more meat) - but we have big flat teeth in the back for grinding fruits and veggies up. I firmly believe our diet should be well balanced (i mean duh, but not vegan, not carnivorous lol) with a lot of fruit. Veggies are good too, but i dont think most people eat nearly enough fruit. We have like 8 front teeth that are good for meat, but the rest are very clearly adapted for plants

There is app I used called “Yuka” you can scan the barcode of any packaged food and it gives it a score out of 100 based on nutrition value and any of unnecessary added shit it may or may not have in it. It even gives a comparison of what TO buy if you discover something you love is terrible for you. It’s fascinating and fun, but I do think it instills a bit of obsession into food which can be unhealthy in its own regard.

I follow many doctors on IG who will also say to avoid seed oils, so in general I do and mostly avoid ultra processed foods. Even yogurt is a processed food, so it’s the ultra processed stuff you want to avoid. For cooking I mainly stick to ghee, butter, olive oil and avocado oil. Be care with the brands you choose for avocado oil and olive oil though. A lot of times something sold as olive oil is mixed with other oils (if it’s made in CA they can’t do that). Many brands will also use the oxidized avocados to make their avocado oil (Chosen brand tested well for not doing this). Also, similar to the story you told about covering up the impact of sugar, saturated fat has been demonized and was said to be the cause of heart disease in a flawed study from the 1950’s. They’ve since shown that transfats/ultraprocessed foods are the real culprit. It’s a minefield out there, but I agree with you about focusing on real foods whenever possible!

Caitlin

Something I learned just yesterday is how unhealthy our coveted coconut oil is. What I previously thought was a health food actually contains about a third more saturated fat than butter.

Nobody is “driven to the margins” to develop a belief or gets a free pass just because they refuse to think for themselves. The right created these conspiracy theories, and its the right who believed them. Its baffling to me that you still see this as a “left” problem.

Jacqueline

Yes, you can. And you probably should. Its growing extremely important to hold people accountable for their own thoughts and their own beliefs. We do not live in a world that allows us to be irresponsible about the way we take in information. I also believe people should be held accountable for their actions, Regardless of what they were too naive or privileged enough to fall for. The full story is always welcomed. That being said, I would stay away from anything that seems like it might be catering to a fear or an emotion (day time news reddit, ahem, youtube etc.)

Jacqueline

I get that the right may buy into more conspiracy theories, but given the extent to which they’ve been demonized and driven to the margins by the currently dominant left, can you blame them?

Tim

That’s why i buy silk, i can foam it like regular milk

rosalia melo

i feel like eating high protein is IMPOSSIBLE i would have to be doing it 24/7, but I tried for MORE protein and....dude, it was great. made me feel more full and energized, there must be something to it!

Shannon McNamara

Shannon McNamara

Shannon McNamara

great point

Shannon McNamara

that makes sense! when I get the almond milks without it it's definitely more watery

Shannon McNamara

Xanthan gum is safe, they use it mostly on ice cream, they have to use it on almond milk to make it creamier.

On estrogen- my spouse just began transitioning (mtf). It’s a slippery slope to trans-medicalism (ie: ppl are more legit trans if they medically “need” to be vs social identity) BUT if you can look at with nuance and curiosity and context, there is very interesting insights from trans people before and after receiving hormone and the mental relief from it - even before any physical changes. My partner was sooooo moody and depressed and just awful before HRT but it has truly helped where SSRIs, therapy etc didn’t That’s how I recognize trans-ness now as a partner of someone who “figured it out” 8 yrs into our relationship- some ppl don’t have dysphoria like “ew I hate penis I wanna be girl” but for my partner it was persistent depression and shame and discomfort that as she explore gender euphoria she began to see she was trans and then idk hormones have done something for her that no meds could do and I feel like there’s a unique but present depression in trans people who aren’t yet aware or seeking transition, that hormones treat in a really wild way idk.

Here’s a little tip: If you’re buying processed food, give Euro delis a try and look for stuff made in Europe. The food tastes way better, and you’ll recognize everything on the label and no seed oils, or palm oil, which is another deep dive). I do all my grocery shopping there, and it’s been such a good switch! If you’re in Chicago area, check out KD deli and food 4 less

MJ

The receipt paper situation makes me think of how yet again they’re screwing over lower income people because kitchen workers, servers, grocery clerks (our essential workers!) touch receipts all day long. That’s so sad.

Sophie Cowie

So I had some issues, did a food allergy test and came up red for soy… mind was blown by how much it’s EVERYWHERE!!!! I try my best to avoid it and now I can spot it out. I can taste it in things. I can’t stand things sautéed in margarine or veg oil (aka soybean oil) - it’s trash. Not speaking for all seed oils but Vegetable Oil aka Soybean Oil is not freaking good dude. It makes me feel sluggish, oily and bad.

Sophie Cowie

as a Carnivore Aurelius and FF follower i laughed my ass off when u mentioned him🤣 my fave corners of the internet colliding LOL (yes i have my seed oil tinfoil hat on sorry)

Alexis DeLucia

Oooh interesting stuff! I think we needdddd the airport episode when you can 👀👀

Zechariah Hephzibah

I am a restaurant server and I am now realizing how many receipts I touch every day!!! Omfg lmao. Anyways great ep Shannon!

Bridget Leslie

Dude…we need a birds aren’t real episode

Alexandra Cohen

Yes to the food benefits episode! How did your month of high protein go?

paige rittersbacher

This episode was so interesting! 🤩

Giuliette

When I was a dumb kid with no resources I would roll joints with receipt paper 😐

Lex

Christine Porter

Our coins are the same but generally only go up to $1

Alyssa Canova

Yeah it actually just takes longer to approve some stuff in Europe. So some stuff won't pass but a lot of it will eventually

Erin

Ok I just looked it up and euro notes and coins have ways for blind people to tell the difference.. sounds like American gov being kinda shitty to their people again

Erin

Oh wtf?! I assumed there was some texture going on that they could feel the difference

Erin

I have so many thoughts on this Europe v US thing, while I do agree with some of the approaches in Europe there are a few things that limit how much weight I give it: Firstly, there are things that health influencers will claim are approved in the US but not the EU like glyphosate, which is false. Secondly, there are things that are approved in the EU that aren’t in the US due to health risks - I’ve seen this in cosmetics. Finally, despite the chronic conditions that are known to come from smoking, in European counties where there is universal healthcare the cigarette buying age and smoking rate has always been lower than in the US.

Estelle

(too high dont read) I was wondering the other day how blind people handle cash bills, and basically they have to just trust that someone will tell them honestly (or have to remember where it is or how its folded) or apparently now its common to use a smartphone app to identify it, and i just think thats so odd…it seems like braille would be totally possible or we could even make different denominations of bills different sizes. So i guess accessibility is a big argument in favor of a cashless society but the idea scares me. But also I think its important to note that its not 1970 and people in marriages can easily and legally open bank accounts without spousal approval. And i recognize how useful cash is in an emergency where you need to disappear without a trace, but then also, leave your cell phone behind, ya know? If we’re talking an extreme situation where someone has access to your personal data and is actively trying to track you down…..idk the whole concept feels fear-mongery to me but i cant speak to being in a domestic violence situation!!! I do like physical money and just having physical possession of it and ready access to it but most of us are already SO far gone as far as sharing our data, its so easy because we trade it for convenience all the time!!! But i think a lot of the arguments against cashless can/should be addressed in other ways. And this doesnt even begin to address the concept of the gold standard and the fact that US currency isnt backed by gold….i honesly don’t know what any of that means but like! So much to consider!

Alyssa Canova

I remember hearing about how pregnant women shouldn’t touch receipts; just so insane the trickle down effect. Also the way that the estrogen concept has been flipped on its head; because women have been told for generations that we’re too emotional to run a country or a business. And now they want our estrogen 🤔🤔🤔

Emili Van Volkinburg
