Uncontacted tribes (and Taylor Swift tracklist)

Hey floozies! This week we're rounding up some trending topics (forgive the double dose of Taylor this week but she's unavoidable!) and then a mini deep dive into a cool topic - uncontacted tribes. I cover some of the most "famous" ones and then dive into internet ponderings of how to be ethical when it comes to uncontacted tribes and groups. Timestamps:

0:00 Taylor trackless speculation

17:50 Taylor Swift Harvard class

19:44 The pairing of calculated and effortless people

22:30 Drake’s nudes

An uncontacted tribes deep dive, 20 minutes about Taylor despite the ban, and the Owen Wilson role model reveal. Classic Fluently Forward is back baby!

Dillon

The smallest man who ever lived- is it about the famous picture with Bruno Mars?

Aleksandra

There is this German tv duo that got famous because they invented a show where they sent each other around to world to complete seemingly impossible tasks and one year one of them had to go visit the korowai and play a board game with them and he did haha and he also asked them if they still practiced cannibalism and they explained that they stopped doing that many years ago but they don’t know if any tribes nearby still do it :) the videos are obviously all in German but if you have a look on YouTube you’ll find footage of this (copy this to search on yt "klaas bei den Kannibalen Pro7" or "Duell um die Welt Klaas bei den Kannibalen") :))

Mellloo

Yes! Apparently there’s a whole theory that Taylor references ariel giving up her voice bc part of the reason she and Joe broke up was that he wanted her to give up her career 👀 i wish i could find and tag the TikTok account that summed it up more clearly

Rebecca

Hmm being cured from curable diseases comes with a HUGE price aka working horrible jobs

Bippity Boop

So happy I joined this community ahhh. Always loved the pod I feel like my weirdness is matched here and understood. Anyways, LITERALLLLLY 100% agree about the effortless/calculated combo. Like wow spottt on and I think it’s possible to be both 🧐

Caro

Listening to the part where you go over the Taylor song titles and I think “but daddy I love him” is maybe I’m reference to the little mermaid? Because I know Ariel says that haha

Michelle

Loved this episode! Also I don’t know if it’s just me, but i’m seeing the pendulum swing against taylor after the grammys/album name/lawsuit against her jet, at least on my fyp 👀 I think your September predictions about over exposure are about to be massively vindicated

Liam C

Oh also if you can’t handle Yellowjackets the wilds is pretty similar but less violent! Though it’s more similar to lost overall. Still mad that it was cancelled

RJ

Also totally agree with most of the Taylor song predictions. I’m expecting the first single from the new album to drop March 15th since the clock necklace was pointing to 3:15

RJ

Tbh I feel like a lot of debate about isolated tribes comes from the (mostly) white need to conquer places as well as the overall saviour complex while those same people probably are unwilling to address ongoing issues that are all over or even in the places they live. It’s similar to why I have concerns about people going to mars, more people with the wealth and opportunities to go to these places need to be more respectful and adapt to the cultural norms instead of just trying to “fix” them. Also the religious harassment of going to one of these tribes to “spread the word” is disgusting to me and I wish more people recognized how gross that behavior is 🫠

RJ

Also an easy way to remember the way you want to say women is “whim in” 😂 like we’re going in on a whim

RJ

Omg sago is pretty similar to tapioca from what I’m aware so it could potentially be used to make a super chewy bread. It’s also made into pearls, similar to boba and eaten like this https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cr-E9VYJjfB/?igsh=NnoxczBnNHFkOXo4

RJ

Just a fun story, i am from Slovakia, and we had this guy (Moric Benovsky if you want ti google) become a king of Madagascar at one point. (At that time also inhabited by many tribes). How it happened was some crazy story too. Thats all i kept thinking about! (Also smazing episode thank you for it!)

Paulina Altofová

I think about weird stuff when it comes to tribes, for example, what If someone gets a uti? Like that’s horrible without medicine

Valia

Shannon! Please send us the Drake video. I very much want to see it & I’m not on X so I can’t find it.

Cece

shannon please send/dm im @mspowersss

✨Riley✨

Guys how do i see the Drake nudes

✨Riley✨

Shannon, this was awesome. I loved your SwiftlyNeutral rec a few episodes back and I always enjoy your perspective on Taylor! I cannot find this Drake video anywhere, all I see on X/Twitter are baby elephants waving their trunks around 🫠 can you point me in the right direction??

Katie

***isolated peoples💚

Hannah Lee

And side note: don’t worry about talking too much about TS

Mathilde Morelli

Looooved this episode!!

Mathilde Morelli

this is SUCH a great episode and i’m only 15 mins in LOL i love the idea of turning a mountain into a molehill it makes me emotional 🥲 also thank you for digging into the TTPD tracks, the titles felt lana del ray esque

Nat N

I would love an episode on Clara Bow!

Monica

Also I know u said Yellowjackets seemed scary but it gets so good the more you watch!! The symbolism in it goes crazy

taylor ruthardt

I live very far from the US, and my favorite singer of all time: LANA DEL REY. I like Taylor and her art, and I was even offended by how underestimated she was in my area(?), but lately I feel that there has been too much of her. and yes, in her new album, although it hasn’t been released YET, I found a lot from Lana. I wish Lana would stay away from Taylor!

My brother goes to the same university John Allen chau went to. The university promotes spreading the word of Jesus A TON but in a Christian’s vs the world kind of way. Like I would read letters from the university sent to parents and the wording was a lot of “the world has gone astray and us Christian’s are a small minority with these progressive ideals becoming popular.” Idk just left a bad taste in my mouth

taylor ruthardt

When taylor announced her new album at the grammys i kinda groaned after my initial excitement. All i could think about was how you have said shes so overexposed! Im a swiftie but its kinda hard to defend her.

Hannahsbananass

lol guess I’m a bit due for a FF patreon comment essay lol, 3 things 1. I heard speculation that the i can fix him track is going to be trying to shape a narrative about her time with Matty Healy lol, but your idea was really interesting song material! 2. I’m the calculated friend! My bestie is this multi-talented natural savant character and draws people like a damn human magnet. And I definitely do emulate things from her more (as I do with other friends too) but it’s not so black and white as she’ll do the same with me sometimes. We’ve gotten really drunk and have admitted to experiencing jealousy of one another in different ways. If I could choose, of course I’d prefer to be effortless, but calculated does have it’s advantages- part of why the pair up happens I think. 3. Loved the isolated tribes mini dive! My background is in anthropology and the conversation about portraying indigenous people as savages and what approach to take with contacting them has been going on for centuries. We learn that early anthropologists are often to blame for not going in open minded and reporting back to the public in this tone that everything is so strange and/or inferior (i.e. “savage”). A bit into the 20th century, after decades of the paternalistic approach (as in” we have to share our progress/“civilized” life with them”), they kind of realized that tribal identity may be lost and went into overdrive trying to protect them from advancement- I think with little to no regard for when they expressed interest in learning more. So the “cease to exist” mindset can also be really insulting, like who is to say they can’t incorporate progress without preserving important elements of their culture? Anyways, you come away from these anthropology takes with the understanding that it basically comes down to just listening to their preferences for how to live in the event of contact. 😮‍💨 🤚🎤 😂

Annie

Great episode! I love any educational type episodes like this

Erin

Looooovvveee the uncontacted peoples tangent!! I think we have similar YouTube algorithms

Hannah Lee

Also, as an Appalachian, I do not think there are uncontacted tribes around here, but there are definitely undocumented people who live in the hollers who definitely don’t go to school, pay taxes, go to doctors, etc. so they’re basically just people who have slipped through the cracks and are basically just not members of society. They do speak English though.

Silas Pulliam

I went on such a deep dive literally like 4 days ago about North Sentinal Island so I’m shook right now that this is the episode for this week.

Silas Pulliam

Swampwitch! Thank you!

Shannon McNamara

Oh YES I can so see that

Shannon McNamara

honestly Shannon this is literally my favorite episode you’ve done and i love your show

LadySwampWitchGivsNeauFux

I think a few of the songs on the second half of the album are about Matty Healy. “The Smallest Man Alive” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” scream Matty to me.

Lily

Well not fun per se but a really interesting topic, really enjoyed listening! Linguistics getting me today 😂

Abby Rose

So fun! I love this episode!

Abby Rose

wow this is such a cool episode about the Sentinelese & other tribes. i love anthropology . Gonna get on youtube and check out these tribes

LadySwampWitchGivsNeauFux

Love your un-contacted tribe deep dive! And I agree with you about women making people more comfortable. My profession is very woman dominated and I find it very collaborative as opposed to competitive. I love it

Jess Thomas

agreed!!! Feed us more pls lol

Marissa

I would also like to add she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and insomnia. There’s a lot to unpack there. Guess we will have to wait for the song to come out to see what it’s all about.

Marissa

I read that there was *speculation* that Clare Bow was bisexual, and that there was a ton of speculation about her romantic/sex life in general, which drove her to insanity and a suicide attempt. “A note was found in which Bow stated she preferred death to a public life.” - from wikipedia. I’m afraid a lot of swifties are focusing on the bisexual aspect which is great for gaylors, (I’m a Bi-lor lol) but overlooking the fact that Clara Bow didn’t want everyone to keep speculating / scrutinizing about her romantic life and became suicidal because of it.

Marissa

i still love the taylor content so thank you for your service lol 🙇🏻‍♀️
