Thoughts on Daisy Jones and the Six series...

Just a quick note! Wanted to share my thoughts on how the book translated to the screen, dying to know what other folks from book club (or who read the book) thought about the show

Comments

I loved all of it until the ending. Storyline and actors were amazing. Music was amazing. I hated the ending sm though.. it was giving HIMYM half assed ending lol I’m over this whole women giving everything to a selfish man trope as if another woman is just sitting around waiting for the guy in the end. I feel like m*n are gonna watch this and think they can cheat if they claim it’s some ill fated love or some shit🫠

I almost wish they would’ve casted older actors for the interview scenes and younger actors/ the actors they did cast for the throwback scenes. I agree with the person that said Riley doesn’t have the cool girl/nonchalant vibe which was disappointing when watching the show. I’m only on episode 4 but I would’ve liked to see the interview scenes more and have them talk about what was going on

Shannon puts everything on the Patreon feed, so just keep an eye out for posts. She just did a poll and announced the next book. Last time she posted the zoom link before we met and I’m sure that’s what it will be again.

I haven’t finished the series yet, and I keep forgetting that I haven’t finished it yet, which probably means I don’t love it. I do enjoy the music. Some weird casting choices but esp. Sam Claflin. He looks about 20 years older than Graham.

schulmanatrix

I loved the show so much! I thought they did a great job portraying Daisy as a 70s manic pixie dream girl and Billy as the ‘tortured artist.’ So many mixed reviews on this show but I was very into it. Would love an ep on their blind items!

Landon

The emrata Harry styles video doesn’t look like a kiss at all just two fish gasping for air lol. Also I haven’t read or watched DJ yet but it did remind me that Suki and Sam played lovers in love, Rosie. And I think part of what made Sam look so old was the costume plus the darker longer hair sorta dragging his features down. Bonus: I thought it was Sam cafflin until last year 🤦🏻‍♀️ mild dyslexia strikes again

RJ

I really liked the show overall!! Liked: Riley keough as daisy, the Camilla Eddie hookup plot change, Simone’s story line, and the change in the ending plot, the music, billy daisy chemistry, and I liked the cadence with which they released episodes so I could mini binge Disliked: billy looking old (however I feel like Sam would’ve been a great billy 10 years ago), Karen being British, small thing but Camilla sounds so LA like not from Pittsburg at all lol, generally thought it should’ve been grittier (more drugs, darker depiction of addiction, etc.)

Sarah Raizen

Could someone give me a quick rundown on how to join the book club?

Maddie Deters

Omg ok irish and I was so pissed off at the Irish price thing but never considered they were possibly using that to make him out to be full of shit haha if so then kind of genuius

Erin

So I'm Irish and the Irish prince thing pissed me off so much haha cos I know he said he's part of a "non ruling" family or whatever he said but still, we don't have that, that doesn't exist here!! There is literally no Irish royalty here

Erin

i wish this podcast was longer Shannon, id love to know - all - of ur opinions. what if we do a book club recap???

anna horta

YES. 100%.

anna horta

Overall really liked the show but I didn’t love what they did to daisy’s story before the band! Like she was supposed to be the it girl of the time and had fame and a career on her own which they didn’t include at all. Like how did she manage to get billed first with an ego like Billy’s if she was a nobody at the time?

Nicole Shannon

Right?? Like they alluded to her sleeping with a hs bf that reached out but I guess they wanted to keep it in the band to sting a bit more?

Nicole Shannon

Shannon pls do a succession episode since the new season just started!!

karisma calhoun

I also LOVED their singing/the album (I’ve had it on repeat in a playlist with Rumors for like a week)

Hannah Lee

I must be the odd-man out, because I thought everyone was perfectly cast, ESPECIALLY Sam Claflin😅 he’s like exactly how I pictured Billy in the book, but that’s something I love about book to screen adaptations is seeing how everyone’s vision of the characters is different!

Hannah Lee

It was sooo bad😩😩 Acting was 90% terrible (Camila and Graham were good - Suki was so bad that the way she delivered her lines made it seem like she’d only just learned English and had no idea what she was actually saying), story/structure of the show was so unoriginal and cliched, music was actually painful and couldn’t have been less catchy. Singing was SO weak it was laughable, Sam Claflin was a haggard old man with zero sex appeal or rock star energy. The costumes did look very forever 21 - like they just released a “70s/hippie!” collection. It was one of those shows that keeps insisting to it’s audience that something amazing is happening, but it’s not and we’re bored to tears. Overall, zero edge & just so, so disappointing.

Misty

Best kiss scene… Nick and Jess in New Girl

Hannah

100% agree abt the lack of cool girl energy

so many relevant points u brought up!! 1. i didnt think Sam Claffin fit billie’s description AT ALL. and tbh i didnt find him hot (he does look old) and that contributed to me not watching the show that much 2. camila is SO beautiful and was perfectly casted, but i RLLY hated how in the books she’s so self assured but on the show she’s so insecure. i hatw it cuz camila’s confidence was 70% of the book and how billie dealt w things so it made no sense to me to change such a big personality trait 3. i watched 3 eps before i gave up but Daisy in my mind had much fuller and curly red hair and i thought that was a bigger part of her personality. i like riley bur i also interpreted daisy to be more rude? but in the tv show she doesnt seem as “bitchy” and diva-like (for lack of a better words) as in the book 4. im also so curious as to why the fuck they do small irrelevant changes like the Italian/Irish prince, italy/greece. like why? id fr rlly like to know cuz what does that change for the director hahaha 5. i didnt like the book so maybe thats why i extra didnt like the series but i was dying for the book club’s opinions so ty for this episode!

anna horta

Please for next book club can we do tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow

Ava Lee

i saw some people say that sam worked as billy because it showed how much addiction can age a person. however, then billy and camilla looked like they had a huge age gap since the actress that plays camilla is like 26, but whatever ya know. i know i'm going to get dogged on for this but i don't think riley keough is a very good singer. also it think that the music as a whole sounded very modern. like phoebe bridgers worked on the aurora album and it shows. i love it! but it doesn't sound like the 70s.

Emily Chisholm

Love the book got bored of the show two episodes in. The show was weirdly paced I thought, and I just do not vibe with Riley Keough as Daisy she doesn’t have the effortlessly cool energy that Daisys known for

Valerie

I was super happy they gave Simone more of a storyline! Overall I felt about the same as the book - entertaining and a fun read/watch, but not too deep. Music has been stuck in my head 😂 Are we doing another bookclub month soon!?

Kelsie Edick

yes - i loved the surf scene with karen and graham!

Shannon McNamara

same haha, i've been listening to the album on spotify like its any other album!

Shannon McNamara

I LOVED the series. I hope there’s a season 2 and/or a tour

Rowe Maine

I can’t tell if the show writers were being clever making Nicky “non-ruling Irish nobility/ royalty” to imply that he’s full of shit and daisy’s too out of it to notice, or if they just did 0 research and have have no concept of Ireland in the 70’s 🙃😂

Bronagh

So glad we saw more of Karen and Graham!! Also interesting twist of Camilla and Eddie but I thought it went well with Eddie’s hatred of Billy. The tv show made Camilla more annoying for me. I liked how they spiced things up more with daisy and billy in the show. Also loved how the changed Simone’s character and how they gave her more of a story.

Meghan

Loved the booked! Read it several years ago and it’s still in my top ten favorite reads of the past few years. The show started SLOW to me and I also was disappointed at the chemistry between Daisy and Billy. HOWEVER, it got better each episode and ended strong (and the early lack of chemistry that was off-putting went away completely imo). Still give the book 9.5/10 and give the show a solid 8. Also, love the music from it!

CGRenna

i’m not done with the show but i’m… baffles that cami slept with eddie??? and why did they not put pete in the show 🫥

Samantha McKinney

Thought it was more enjoyable than the book ☺️ IMO the author is a good plotter but lousy writer,
