I felt like I was in the club because of all the lights and stuff going on all around the stadium. They definitely were my most surprising win of a concert. I found myself a Chainsmoker fan after that.

I work in the music industry, not in live sound, but I have done it before and been around it a lot so I can provide a little insight. That echo-y effect that you’re talking about hearing is delay. It’s very commonly used in pop because it beefs up the voice, creating the sense that the singer’s voice is larger than life, more powerful than a single person. Reverb is also used on basically everyone’s vocals and it’s what makes a live singer really sound warm and fill the room. “Natural” reverb and delay come best when singing in the shower, hence why we all love it. And that auto-tune that you mention, is pitch correction. Which is basically a filter the sound guy would throw on a channel on the soundboard and either he would manually manipulate or set a threshold to account for the singer’s needs. For instance, if it’s known that the singer is usually a half step flat, that would make it so only when that half step flat happens in the line, the filter knows to just give it a little umph to sharpen the note a touch. It’s a wildly cool thing to see but like anything, it can be abused and really allow poor singers to thrive without ever getting better cause there’s no sonic reason for them to correct their bad habits and improve the voices. Hope that was interesting to literally anyone 😂 I’m just a big music nerd and love this kind of stuff.
