Minuteman bonus video: launch procedures and 'alternative' uses

Hi everyone. Whilst researching for the D-17 video I briefly became fascinated with the actual procedures necessary to launch a nuclear missile. These are well covered already on Youtube but there were (and still are) some quirks specific to the Minuteman that I thought were worth discussing.

Though I don't mention it here, this also explains why the Minuteman 3 system famously still used 12" floppy disks until as late as 2018. Once you have your process for launching nuclear missiles ironed out....you really don't want to change it unless you absolutely have to!

In this video I also discuss some of the more....unconventional proposals for the Minuteman missiles.

The Soyuz used to use a ‘giant wooden match’ to ignite the engines. I presume the R7 ICBM variant did too….so maybe we weren’t too far away from ‘light the big fuse to end the world’.

I still think that launching nuclear missiles via lighting a fuse would be the most dramatic way of ending the world.
