Red Revolution — Chapter 11: Charred Truths

Good news! Volume 1 of this fic is complete, as of today. I'll be essentially bingeing a little bit and creating a lore doc for myself over the weekend. The next arc will be an original one, and I've only read up to Vol. 7. I'm gonna start with Slash Dog (the DxD prequel) and then work my way up from Vol. 3 since I've written and read Vol. 1 & 2 to death at this point.

This chapter has been edited, as has Chapter 10. I've moved a scene from the start of Chapter 10 to the start of 11, but this chapter is still 7k words, so do not fret! ^^

EDIT: I've added a teeny bit at the end of this + the cover image is some chapter-specific art!

Comments

This is a comment I wrote to someone who said something similar on the thread, but it encapsulates my thoughts: Canonically, the only reason why the Riser marriage was a thing is because Zeoticus and the nameless Lord Phenex want more grandchildren. This betrothal has been a thing for years, apparently, and was set to go ahead once Rias graduated from college. By then, she would have completed her peerage and worked out everyone's issues, allowing her to win her own freedom. But, given the things happening around that time politically, I can make a few inferences as to why it was brought forward: 1) Actual peace between the angels, devils, and fallen angels, and the fallout of such a thing. The three factions are, and have been, in a period of cold war. By the time canon rolls around, actual peace is right around the corner. Rias' marriage doesn't have much to do with that on the surface, but hear me out. Given that Kuoh was the site of fallen angel activity, Rias' parents might understandably be worried about other fallen targeting her either as retribution or to kick off the Great War a la the Kokabiel method. Thus, they used the pre-existing marriage and brought it forward. By marrying Riser, she probably goes to the underworld and stays there. Tatsumi is not the sole reason for the marriage going forward. Yes, he's the Red Dragon Emperor, but he's not really on their radar. He probably is a factor, though, just not as big as the whole political angle to the marriage, as well as Rias and her general safety, seeing that real peace between the factions is at hand. For those who don't like that idea, the easiest way to strike at Sirzechs is through her.

Honestly, I love how you made it where Rias Mother was the impetus behind the marriage. It makes sense. She comes from the family of the guy who calls himself the Old Devil King or whatever. I don't remember exactly what his title was, but it sort of makes sense that she'd be that sort of political social climber too. It makes sense that her father, who seems so friendly and open with Issei, would actually be the one to have supported his daughter, while the mother is the one with the grasping political ambitions. It's a nice twist on the usual cliche. I also like how you see the argument evolve between them. Honestly, I've always been of the opinion the reason the marriage was moved up was because Rias got Issei 'cause like, look at it from an objective point of view. She just gained the Red Dragon Emperor, a user of a Longinus, and she's already nearly as powerful as Riser was. Give her to university and several years of training with the Red Dragon Emperor to prepare. And there's no chance he has a victory. So honestly, from an outside point of view, it looks like that Riser realized he was going to lose that fight and immediately push for an early duel. Which makes him look pathetic. Because it's basically him saying that he's not confident enough to think he could beat her when she's an actual grown adult rather than a child.
