So. Yesterday, while I was working on polishing up the throwing mechanics in my game and prepping to add in a charged up throw ability, I asked my resident artist to help animate that. And after only a little bit of initial confusion, he came up with this:
It's still a work in progress, but as you can see, it's pretty awesome already.
It's also ever so slightly impossible, lol. See, I told him to animate this as if Maya and the box being thrown were both one object. But obviously they aren't one object in the actual game, the box is it's own separate sprite. And it's also not meant to be the only object that Maya can throw, there may be many other objects she can throw, and it's not realistic to create a unique custom animation for every one of them. This is animated to get an idea for how it should look if none of these were problems: make it look good first and I'd be the one to figure out the technical issues to make it work in-game
With that in mind, I came up with this animation thinking I'd achieve it using custom shaders. The idea was pretty simple at first, just replace the smeared colors while she's spinning with the colors of whatever object she's throwing, easy. But then it got into wondering how I'd smoothly transition from just a regular sprite to these smeared colors, seeing the way it gets stretched and blurred but still readable as a box when animated here. I thought about how I could potentially turn that idea into a shader, and incorporate it into the animation so that it works with any object she picked up. I thought about the potential to keep the effect as the object is sent flying in whatever direction she throws it in. And that's when I realized that this little side project is not going to get done in one day, lol.
So with that in mind, I thought about the promise I made back in February to release a new build of one of my games at least once a month. If I indulge in this idea now, I know it'll take at least a week before I'm through with it and can get back to making the game proper. That means I'm failing on the promise that people are paying me to keep, and so even though I still don't have many supporters, I want to know if that's okay with you guys. I'm also curious about the wider consensus though and how many people actually vote in these polls, so this one is public. Again, if you're a paid supporter, make sure you also vote in the supporter only poll here!
