Smaller post today, unfortunately I wasn't able to get that goal I set out last week of stringing multiple levels together with the portal mechanic. A lot of IRL stuff came up with family that kept me really busy this week, so I've been tired and unable to get as much done as I would've liked. That said though, I do still have a few things to share with you
Here are the 4 world themes I've come up with for the game that I'll most likely end up using. Currently the planned plot of the game is as follows: Maya learns about a special cake that supposedly tastes sweeter than anything you can imagine, and sets out to get one for herself. With that goal in mind, these themes felt like the ones that would fit that goal the most, and create the most opportunity for unique obstacles and hazards. Area 1 of course is like her 1-1, her green hill zone: it'll be the starting area with few hazards to worry about. Area 2 would be a mix of sky and city themes, it would introduce her flight suit as well as a variety of cloud NPCs that could act as both enemies and aids in platforming. Area 3 features cake as a prominent theme as she comes closer and closer to her goal, and finally Area 4 has her reaching her goal, but having to navigate a dangerous factory landscape to get there as well as fending off the robots running it. I haven't nailed down names for these areas yet (hence calling them areas 1-4), but a friend of mind did actually come up with these names, which I do quite like:
1 - Frolic Fields
2 - New Nimbtopia
3 - Glacé Grotto
4 - Bedeviled Bakery
I still don't funny know how I'll be able to execute on these ideas, but having a plan in mind should help inform the different types of level elements I want to create going forward. I also started planning a bit more on the various ways that Maya herself will expand throughout the game, so with any luck I'll be able to share some of that sooner rather than later.
But for now, that'll be all. As always, thanks for reading, and until next time!
