Baldur's Gate 3: Tabaxi Mod - Version 0.4

Hey guys- I need to apologize again for the long delay between updates. The family health thing is still taking up a good bit of time, though I think the main crisis has passed. Definitely hoping to get back to a normal update schedule- there are far too many games out there with a shocking lack of playable anthro characters to let up now.

This 0.4 update adds a couple of new fur options, and includes a second mod file that can be optionally enabled via the mod manager, which turns Shadowheart into a tabaxi with a tuxedo cat fur pattern. Let me know what you guys think of the look- if there's demand, I can add an alternate option for Shadowheart's appearance.

Note that Shadowheart's portrait only changes on level up, so the game will likely show her as elf initially until you gain a level- still looking for a work-around to fix that. The facial rigging is also still not quite as good as I'd prefer, due to technical issue- though apparently, the official BG3 modding tools are about to be released publicly, and those may provide a solution.

The final 1.0 version will be coming up soon- either in the next update or the one after that. That will include some additional tabaxi NPCs and tabaxi-themed objects, and may also include some tabaxi dialog for Shadowheart. I'd actually been considering contacting Shadowheart's voice actress to ask permission to use an AI version of her voice for the mod, though apparently she's been pretty outspoken against the use of AI voice cloning, so that's most likely not going to be an option. Still, I think the mod can definitely benefit from some dialog edits, even if they have to be silent.

Once I release the 1.0 version to the Nexus, I'll be posting a new poll for which game to mod next. I'll be taking suggestions on which options to include, so if there are any games that you'd really like to see with anthro characters, let me know.

As usual, you can download the new version below. The installation guide is at: https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Modding:Installing_mods, and note that this also requires the mod at https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/141

Baldur's Gate 3: Tabaxi Mod - Version 0.4

Comments

Excellent mod, due to difficult installation to Baldur's Gate 3 I had to resort to loading it by way of using Vortex to install it.

Stanley Hutchison

Yea, the Mod comes with two files, one that includes Shadowheart (Furry Edition) and one that just adds it as a pickable race.

Tails Atlamillia

Is there possibly going to be a canine option like in Cyberpunk? Or maybe an option to turn Gale into a anthro? i think he would be awesome as a doggo :3

Jasper LaChance

Is there a version where I can keep Shadowheart as an elf? ♥

Tragiicomic

is there a file that keeps shadowheart as an elf

Darth_Relyt1

Thank you for this excellent mod! I first got into your mods through the Cyberpunk exotics and now that I started BG3 I was excited to learn I could bring my tabaxi character from actual 5E to life. If you’re still making new skins for them based on small cats I would love to see a clouded leopard style :3

Keeta

Looking forward to the full release, hope to eventually see The Witcher 3 get some anthro mods with the RedKit.

IMGNR

First, I'd like to say that I, and also some fo my friends, have been impressed with your work. Speaking for myself, I have not found many artists who do digigrade feet, or tails, or other such anatomical features correctly nor as well as you do. That said, is it known to you that your fur texture does not have full coverage of the player model? There's anotable patch between the thighs (at least on the female variant) where the texture is still default skin instead of fur. And is there a plan to fix this?

MaurolepisDreki

Is there a normal foot option for the Tabaxi models?

SonOfWolf

Can I make a suggestion? Can you add a way that we can be small in size? In the 5e edition of the Tabaxi they can both be medium sized(what we have now) and small in size. Like the size of Halflings, dwarfs, gnomes ect

Sir Southpaw

One thing I'm confused about regarding Shadowheart's retexture. I haven't played this version yet, but at one point, there is a younger version of Shadowheart appearing in her flashbacks, along with her parents (elf and a human respectively). How would those be handled?

Test Test

The Feline Agility ability doesn't seem to be implemented correctly - or at least not how it's written in the 5e rules, specifically with how it interacts with Dash. The Feline Agility ability says "When you move on your turn in combat, you can double your speed until the end of the turn" The dash action lets you move an additional amount equal to your speed, including modifiers. In essence, Feline Agility plus Dash should quadruple your speed, but because it's implemented by just taking the Dash action for free, it "only" triples your movement speed. For a technical way to implement it, maybe look to the Potion of Speed or the Haste spell, if you want to change it to how it is in the books?

Alexander Hvilshøj

That would be so awesome!

Noah Rice

Thanks for the quick reply! Even just disabling whatever puts the generic genitals on the model for perma-SFW regardless of setting would look better than what currently happens.

Sartharina/Scow2

The neck seam should definitely be fixed in the next release- I finally figured out the correct formatting for normal maps in BG3, which had been creating a lot of problems. I'll also be working on blending in the crotch area so that the genitals don't look so bad- though currently, the plan is still to keep the mod and Patreon SFW. That said, if anyone wants to make a NSFW addon to this mod, I'll be happy to help with modding advice, sending over source files, etc. I think someone released something like that a while back for the CP2077 mod, so it does seem fairly likely that something like that could happen post-release.

CobaltOwl

I haven't been able to figure out a good way to disable the digitigrade paws for specific armors, unfortunately- though I may release an alternative plantigrade version of the mod for people who want to use it with armor mods.

CobaltOwl

Thanks! I'll definitely be adding some Owlcat games options to the next poll- WotR does have the Kitsune race for anthro content, though their other two games are badly in need of something similar (and, believe it or not, there is a way to add an anthro PC to Rogue Trader that wouldn't conflict with the lore- though I'm still working through how that would function story-wise).

CobaltOwl

Is the complete lack of support for the nude model intentional at this point, and will it be fixed? With the game's nudity off, the leaf clips through the character's crotch, and with it on, it has badly-placed human genitals - There's also a very obvious seam around the neck.

Sartharina/Scow2

Will you be editing the foot model to move forward in the case of armor models u haven't specifically altered? That way even modded armors can be worn without the feet sticking behind the pants? Or something like that I guess

Noah Rice

I hope everything is alright. Also love the update, especially the change to the splash art! As for a suggestion, is adding catfolk to either Pathfinder: Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous possible?

Mephilis

I've been loving the model so far, though.

Jackal Coyote

I tried those initially, but they didn't look very good with the tabaxi models, unfortunately. I may make a custom slit-pupiled eye later on, though since caracals and ocelots have round pupils, that hasn't been a super high priority so far.

CobaltOwl

Sorry if this has already been asked, but there are already cat-eye textures in the game. Why not enable them for use here? Kobolds and Dragonfolk notably have them.

Jackal Coyote

I'm actually working improving the eyes right now- those should look a bit better in the next release.

CobaltOwl

will there be a way to make the eyes less huge and uncanny?

Cirino Drahkhart

really great

Natsil

I'm curious as to if there will be a snow leopard or lynx variant of the tabaxi with the full release. I've been enjoying the mod so far in the beta phase :)

Quin_Weasel

Cheetah markings would be really cool. I'm not biased or anything I swear! x3

Eagle Chee

That's a bug with the current version, unfortunately. Still trying to figure out why it's happening, but I'll hopefully have it fixed in the next update.

CobaltOwl

Is the mod not compatible, yet hopefully if you want to play as shadowheart? I get this strange error (well a small lock beside shadowhearts portrait) with the game when starting a new character. That it is not available for early access. Or perhaps I simply didn't install the mods correctly. Thanks.

z3nzor

I'd actually forgotten about the dream guardian issue, so thanks for reminding me. Yes, I'll definitely be adding that feature and looking into the racial elixir thing. Mods that add additional features or fixes to this mod are also very welcome.

CobaltOwl

It's been awesome to follow along the progress of this! As a heads up, an optional dependency on Tag Framework allows you to give them custom racial elixirs (from an Act 2/3 character), and modders have found out how to set up custom races as dream guardians - any plans for those features, and if not, any objections to someone creating a patch that requires this mod to add those features in?

NellsRelo

Now I see I definitely need to install this update! I just started my playthrough as a tabaxi and I'm still in the first act. Can't wait to encounter the new NPC!

Max

I use Blender to import and export the models, though I mostly use Maya for the actual modelling, since I'm a little faster with the workflow there. For the textures, I usually start by painting the models in Mudbox, then add extra detail in Photoshop.

CobaltOwl

There is also one tabaxi NPC in the first act, and I think a handful of minor bug fixes. I'll definitely be adding more tabaxi NPCs in the next update.

CobaltOwl

What software do you use to make all these models and textures if I may ask?

Charlse

Wishing your family good health during these times! I'm glad to hear the main crisis has passed. Just curious, is there anything else new in this update apart from the new fur options and the second mod file for Shadowheart?

Max

This is something you're probably aware of, but I started my playthrough with this mod today and I'm playing a male Tabaxi, the only issue that I have is that the male Tabaxi's eyes don't close all the way, and only the females do.

CasuallyFurryDonut

Any chance you'd consider adding an all-white cat into the color options? My dream Durge is a murderhobo albino tabaxi. I would gladly pay for a commission! :)

Lala Derp

To avoid spoiling it for anyone, I’ll just ask: were changes made to the two people she meets in act 3?

Anthony Stuart

That's not a load order issue- for some reason, the CC doesn't currently include a "Hide Clothing" option for Tabaxi. I'm not yet sure why, but I'll look into it for the next update.

CobaltOwl

idk if this is a load order issue, but there is no option in CC to toggle clothes. Is there a specific placement for this mod? I was hoping to use the 'none' option for the *bits* but I'm not sure if that's something that has been implemented or not

CasuallyFurryDonut

Always Happy to see a new Update. But don`t worry. Family and Health is always more important. :)

Lord Of Chaos

thank you!

SonOfWolf

The male models also have the penis with skin textures

the

Hey I got the mod to show up in the manager but I see no tabaxi race in the menus Edit: nevermind I just forgot to export my load order

the

If you've installed the game via Steam, your mod folder should be at: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods\. You may need to create a Mods folder there if one doesn't exist already. You'll want to move the files titled "Tabaxi.pak" and "Tabaxi-Shadowheart.pak" from the zip directly into that folder. Once you've installed the BG3 Mod Manager from https://github.com/LaughingLeader/BG3ModManager, you'll need to go to Settings->Open Preferences and set the Game Data Path (which will probably be C:/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Baldurs Gate 3/Data if you've installed it via Steam) and the Game Executable Path (probably C:/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Baldurs Gate 3/bin/bg3.exe). After setting those and restarting the mod manager, the Tabaxi mods should appear in the right-hand list titled "Inactive Mods", and you should be able to drag them to the left-hand "Active Mods" list to activate them.

CobaltOwl

I'm new to modding, I still can't get the mod to show up in the manager =( I followed the tutorial link the best I could. Awesome mod from what I can see cant wait to get it working.

SonOfWolf

Hey life happens, your work is phenomenal and worth the wait!!!

Kate Fausset

You have done amazing work. Thank you for everything you've made, and I hope you and yours continue to do well.

Stilghar

I'm glad to hear that it seems like the worst might be past. I've been longing for this update for some time. I hope things continue to look up for you and thank you for your continued work on this mod! Edit: Forgot to mention, I love the shadowheart fur pattern, tuxedo cats are so cute, its purfect.

CasuallyFurryDonut

Hi! I love this mod! Would you consider contacting Padme4000 on nexus about how to make this mod compatible with other hair mods? They have a running compatibility patch for custom races to use custom hairs. Some of these hairstyles I see would be sooooo good on the Tabaxi 🥹

Precious Toney

dad needs to be converted still it seems.

Navier

Amazing work! She looks really good, although one thing I had hoped was that she would more closely resemble OG Shadowheart in the facial features. Right now it kinda looks like a cat just put on Shadowheart's hair lol. Would it perhaps be viable to make a "half-tabaxi" version with a smaller muzzle and original eyes/jaw/head shape? That might help with those facial rigging issues. It might also solve some narrative/dialog problems if SPOILERS: her dad stays an elf and her mom is a tabaxi.

Charlse

I must have missed that when I was playing around before thanks for replying!

Apocrypha

That can work well when you need pretty generic dialog, though it gets harder the more specific the ideas are that you want to convey. I'm hoping to add some dialog that sort of weaves being a tabaxi into Shadowheart's backstory- something about having only extremely vague memories of her clan, and not knowing much about her peoples' culture, but feeling a conflicted desire- repressed by her Sharran beliefs- to learn what it means to be a tabaxi. That's probably not something I can convey well with spliced existing dialog, unfortunately.

CobaltOwl

This would be so much better! Thank you!

Kirrah Attomare

Yes, it's definitely possible to play as a black cat in the current version. There are currently five fur options, which can be selected by changing the tabaxi subrace in character creation. Those are based on the fur patterns of caracals, ocelots, black cats, siamese cats, and "standard issue" cats.

CobaltOwl

Apologies if this is already been addressed, but will there be an option to change color of the fur? I've been wanting to recreate a tabaxi ranger I played in a campaign back in the day. But he had black fur I was wondering if that change would eventually be coming or was it possible

Apocrypha

If you can't get the real voice actress, you could try to get someone with a good Shadowheart impression to do the lines-- just an idea.

Emerald Vixen

Wow, thanks a lot for considering it! Btw, I never liked playing as a monk but since it fits so well with your Tabaxi mod, I gave it a go and I love it. You did a really good job!

CrimsonClover

I wonder if splicing dialogue would work in place of using AI? I've seen Skyrim mods that do wonders with that

Anthony Stuart

You're right- I should at least set that up to blend in. I'll see what I can do in the next update.

CobaltOwl

Glad to hear the health issues have taken a positive turn!

William Gerrettie Jr

I'm not sure of it's a bug for me, but (at least the female) naked model has her private parts covered in skin, not fur, which looks a bit disturbing. I wanted to know if that will be fixed. Not asking for a real NSFW version, just a smooth fur cover would be great. I wish you and your family all the best 🍀

CrimsonClover

If she's on Cameo that's a very good sign, I imagine what you're asking is comparable to her Cameo rates.

Rae Bruner

She's on Cameo which is pretty affordable overall, so maybe it's not that bad. But I'd be upfront about the lines being for a mod and provide her a link and/or explanation. Either she's up for it or not, but I think it's better than asking for her permission to use AI

CrimsonClover

She is a professional voice actress, and her rate will reflect that. But there are a few things in your favour: -You are making a quality mod that is very much honouring BG3 as a game and a world. If you show her what you're working on, she'll see you're serious. -If you make it clear the scope of what you're asking, and it is less than an hour of work, then even a three digit hourly rate is still... just three digits. -By approaching her, you'll show you'd rather pay her for her voice than use an AI knockoff, which gives an impression of good faith. The worst case scenario is she says "No", or just ignores the email. But either way if she is against AI then I'd say your options are hire her or nothing. I'd rather your mod not resort to AI generation to fill voice acting holes.

Rae Bruner

That's not a bad idea- her rate must be pretty high, though it definitely couldn't hurt to look into it.

CobaltOwl

If the dialogue you are planning is only a handful of lines, it might be worth reaching out to the voice actress to ask her about... actually paying her to record them for the mod. She might be able to give you a reasonable quote that you can then source a quick donation drive to fund.

Rae Bruner

You could try adding new hair styles? Ones that suit the race a lot more?

Kirrah Attomare

I'm not sure how well those would work with the current textures- though more customization options would definitely be a good thing. I'll see if I can figure out a good way to implement something like that.

CobaltOwl

Is adding more customization options (such as makeup or markings, like what Dragonborn get) anywhere on the roadmap?
