They thrive on bickering. If you recall back in S4... when the awakening Silas drained & killed Jeremy... Damon stayed behind on that island to find Bonnie, ostensibly for Elena's sake. Matt was surprised by it, saying Damon hates Bonnie. But Elena countered with... "He doesn't hate her. I think he actually kind of loves her. You're mean to the people you care about." That was the first glimpse of buried Bamon friendship potential. Nicknames and sarcasm without actually killing = being on Damon's short list.
