Xena: Warrior Princess 4x22: Deja Vu All Over Again" Reaction

“One week they’re melodrama, the next week The Three Stooges.” 🤣 ‘Deja Vu All Over Again’ is probably one of the best clips show I have seen on a TV show. It was such an innovative, fun, self-referential and entirely satisfying episode. It cleverly gave viewers what they wanted - the Joxer/Gabby fans got their happy ending and the Xena/Gabby fans got theirs. Plus turns out Ares couldn’t give much of a damn if Xena is in a male or female body. Nice pansexuality there! It’s one of the better comedy episodes too. At least for me it was. Lucy as Joxer is one hell of a laugh

Yep. They actually did this. And at this point in the show, there was absolutely no denying that Xena and Gabrielle were a couple. I remember Renee talking about this scene in her commentary for it as the director of the episode and she said the reason they did this was because they knew while Xena was reincarnated into Joxer’s body, they could absolutely get away with the kiss even though it meant that it was Xena kissing Gabrielle. Apparently the studio censors didn’t really care about the context of the scene, so long as it didn’t look like a woman was kissing another woman. So they did it. Again - because the cast/crew wanted it. Not because it was a way that they could ‘bait’ a queer audience.

The self-awareness and poking fun at the fandom are very amusingly done here. A significant segment of the fandom said those exact things about Joxer. Hating his forced inclusion to lessen X&G's alone time. But looking back, he really grows on you. And Ted did a great job here as a reincarnation of Xena. I appreciate what they were trying to do with the kiss at the end... which was all Renee's doing. A way to confirm the X&G relationship while not being visually gay. It was controversial with fans for being both too much to some, and too little to others. Again, looking at it now, I really appreciate this episode more and more... for taking the piss and pushing the boundaries.

Did ya catch the credits at the start? This episode was directed by Renee O'Connor. XD Glad you enjoyed it. Xena has a clip show every season and, by definition, none of them are exactly top 10 episode material. Like you said, it also added to the mythology of the show. Since reincarnation came into canon in Between the Lines, we now know Xena and Gabrielle eventually do pass away and get reincarnated (perhaps not in the very next life) into Arminestra and Shakti, then they too eventually pass away and get reincarnated many more times before ending up as Harry and Mattie in 1999. Yeah, look how easily Xena and Gabrielle just kissed in modern time after just realising who they once were. And right after Xena affectionately calls Gabrielle "friend" mind you, something they've used to describe their relationship for years now. Always nice to see Kevin Smith as Ares! The last time we've seen Ares (or Callisto for that matter) was in the season 3 finale.
