Progress Report 11.01.2025

Hello!

I’ve realized that what I’ve been calling progress reports isn’t fully true to their name. Sure, there’s some info about what I’ve done this week, but it’s mostly about my mindset, how it changes, and what I’ve learned. I guess it would be better to just call them dev reports or devlogs? Progress report still sounds nice, though. I think it’ll be fun to read these in the future.

In the last “progress report,” I mentioned that I wanted to focus more on render quality. In the end, though, I also kept a lot of the movement in the characters. I think it adds a lot of life and soul to the game. What ended up happening was that it took me way more time to make renders, and since I wanted to keep up the pace and produce the same amount as before, I think I overdid it a bit. In the end, there are still fewer renders than last week, but at some point, I just started subconsciously cutting corners anyway to hit the 150 render mark which, as I mentioned, I failed to achieve.

I’ve also realized that I should look for interesting camera angles first and adjust my writing accordingly. For example, I wrote a scene of Mia and Lucy chilling on the bed (as you can see), but I didn’t take into consideration that behind the bed, there’s just a plain white wall. This limits the number of interesting angles I can use. To make the best renders, I’ll need to look for appealing settings first and then adapt my writing. I think this lesson will be very important in the future.

Overall, I’m very happy with how things look. I’ve also put more time into the characters’ expressions, for example, Mia will look cuter than ever before.

On another note, seeing how much people enjoyed the sub route, I’ve realized that a huge part of why it works so well is because I took my time building tension. Before the path split, a lot of scenes focused on sudden shifts in atmosphere and instant action. Now, I’ll put more effort into the buildup.

Anyway...

Here’s what I’ve done this week:

Thanks for reading, and until next time!

Apologies I'm new to this. Where do I go to download once subscribed?

Your game is a 5/5 keep it up.

I am quite sure that whatever way you decide to go it's going to turn out right. The 150 renders per week are a good goal to achieve and you should continue to strive for it. I do enjoy both versions of the game but it's too early for me to tell which is the clear winner and I don't think there necessarily needs to be one. You are doing great.

Some buildup sounds like a good idea indeed. In regards to render quality vs quantity I do of course agree that quality is generally preferred. If you find yourself struggling to hit a productive pace however, it might be worth considering simply using less renders per dialog. Probably not by a lot but there might be room for some additional lines for the same render here and there. As always, it’s nice to follow the growth of this project. Keep up the good work ^^
