I Was in a Cult

I’ve decided to start talking about “the cult.” So many questions come in on my socials and in DMs asking about my cult experience that I vaguely elude to occasionally. It’s time I start telling the stories.

It’s hard to know where to begin, but the short version is that when I was 18 I moved to Phoenix to be a part of a group called Master’s Commission that was a ministry out of Phoenix First Assembly of God (now Dream City Church, or something “cool” like that). I was there for three years.

It took years to work through the intense trauma from what I experienced there. I didn’t start calling it a cult until I had been gone for more than 10 years and learned more about what was done to so many of us, and when I knew more about how authoritarian cults work.

My goal now is to expose the cult for what it was and hopefully connect with other former members who are working to heal. I’d also like to use my experience as an example for others to draw parallels to their own and see all harmful cults for what they are.

More to come! And feel free to ask questions that I can answer in the content I’ll be making on this topic.

❤️❤️❤️

I spent 8.5 years in a Christian Publishing company; a very well known one. The hypocrisy from the C level and owners was insane. I’m glad that you have found your voice and a path forward. Here’s to many years of happiness and personal growth!!

It is SO difficult because people have to come to the conclusion that they need to leave on their own. Pushing the issue just causes them to feel more attached to the toxic situation. The best thing is to keep communication open and be a person she could turn to when she begins to have concerns and questions about the group/leadership. When that time comes she will know where to go for help getting away from the group.

Any advice on how to get someone to “wake up”? I know a lady who I think is part of a cult. Her whole life is around this “church”, she’s isolated from family, and she has to consult with her pastor before she agrees to or does anything.
