Underdark Growths Part #1

Hi everybody,

the first part of the Underdark Growths is up!

Two packs are downloadable right now: Crystals and Stalactites & Stalagmites.

- Crystals Scatter Terrain set. With crystal walls, growths and smaller crystal prop-like models. The aim of this set was to give crystals that could be used in different environments. With them you can furnish caves of any kind, Underdark tunnels, enchanted forest as well as asteroid like Astral Plane encounters. These crystal growths are made entirely of crystals with no soil and/or rocks to make them as versatile as possible, and I think that they can satisfy any general crystal terrain need. They can also be used to outline cave walls (there are two kinds of wall sections in them) and combined to make battlefield patterns with a lot of re-usability. The smaller props can be glued as they are, or you can cut them with clippers to the desired angle and glue them to any base, mini, or other piece of terrain to make it belong to a crystal environment.

The huge cluster you can see in the renders is a Crystal Heart. I wanted to spice up the set by adding a centerpiece that would stand out: I can picture it being the beating heart of a primeval titan, or the literal heart of an ancient mountain. Maybe the heroes are questing to reach the innermost chamber of an Underdark maze where this arcane heart rests, ready to dispense power, or waiting to be destroyed.

- Stalactites&Stalagmites Scatter Terrain set. These help a lot in strengthening the "cave vibe". They can be used to outline cave walls and they are interesting cover terrain; you can combine them with rocks, crystals, and any underground terrain to make encounters below ground more alive. As for the crystals above, this set comes with walls, simpler clusters and free growths (without rocks or soil) that can be glued together to make your own clusters or to any terrain to customize it. There is a lot variability with these models, especially if you have overhangs that you want to decorate: many of the free "cones" are designed to be used as stalactites and are great for dioramas.

This set also has a centerpiece: a Stalagmite Throne. It is sized for huge creatures - when I was making it I was picturing a stone giant sitting on it. I imagine the heroes arriving in the depths of the underground complex they have been exploring to discover its deepest inhabitants (or guardians) are stone giants. Now they have to parlay with something very large and very ancient. If the negotiation comes to rolling for initiative, a room with the throne as a centerpiece and stalactites and stalagmites that can be used as weapons by the giant foes should make a memorable encounter!

I find these to be tabletop fundamentals: I postponed making them for a long while, so I am happy they are finally ready for your (and mine!) tabletops :) They may not be the most visually impacting terrain at first, but they are sooo versatile and useful to me, I hope you'll find them to be the same for you!

Now back on carnivorous plants and modular mushrooms. As soon as the test printing is finished I'll post those too, while the poll is coming tomorrow.
