A Peek at Upcoming Fiction

Hi, Patrons!

I’m Elise, your cruise director—er, your fiction editor here at The Deadlands, and I thought it might be cool to give you a sneak peek at what we’ve got coming in the next few months. If it’s not cool, disregard this entire post! (It's cool, trust me.)

July 2023:

Josh Rountree returns to our pages with “Till the Greenteeth Draw Us Down,” a piece of what he’s calling “cozy grief.” I call it Bradburian, because it feels like Ray Bradbury took a trip to Texas and penned this one. The story has some gossamer ties to Roundtree’s July novel, The Legend of Charlie Fish.

August 2023:

Newcomer Fernanda Coutinho Teixeira brings us “The Ferryman.” You are the ferryman, and you’re doing a very important job, and yet you are also exhausted. Your bony shoulders bend with the weight of it all. Earlier this year, Fernanda had a piece in Strange Horizons called “Her.”

September 2023:

You can feel the weather beginning to turn in September. Zachary Rosenberg brings us “Sitting Shiva,” penned around the time his own grandfather passed. It is a gentle exploration of love and Jewish traditions. Zachary’s novel, The Long Shalom, is out now. Alexandra Seidel returns to our pages with “Just Another Door.” Alexandra also writes m/m romance under the name Alexa Piper, and you might enjoy The Devil’s Necromancer while you wait. Doors can take you anywhere, especially in the Deadlands—a theme also currently explored by Sarah Pinsker in our June 2023 issue.

Having come full circle, here’s where I leave you! More updates and sneak peeks soon, including a “reopening to fiction submissions” date.

~Elise
