MC Notes: Recount 06 Thursday

I told the cast from the beginning that they would have to do speeches on Thursday of election week so this was not a surprise to anyone! It’s such a good high school trope and it brought the election back into focus after all the Mina/romantic plotlines started spiraling. I thought you might like to read what Jorie and Eli were thinking as they crafted their speeches so here are their thoughts.

From Jorie:

For the speeches, I'm pretty sure I wrote mine last minute already, and then when I ended up getting blackmailed, I had to rush to add some extra mean-ness to the top during the record!

Jesse and I had hashed together a solid platform before the campaign. Declan and Gwen had pretty idealistic, lofty ideas of what they could achieve if given the chance. Our platform, going into the campaign, had a bit more of an environmentalist swing to it but the biggest point of contention during play ended up being the overfunded rowing team versus all the other clubs in the school, so I ended up focusing on that. An idea we threw around that didn't make it into the game were vegetarian school lunches, but I did at least pay lip service to a beach cleanup.

From Eli:

Not to out myself as a total dork,  but I was the head of debate club at my high school. So I mostly just drew on that for the structure because I thought that Anna would be a naturally good orator. Started with a roadmap of what I’m going to talk about, broke my points into two main buckets (“fun” issues and “real” issues which is a very loose definition of “real” since it’s Anna), and then refuted my opponents points. Again, as Anna, “refuting their points” was the obvious place for her to Get Catty.
