MC Notes: Recount 04 Tuesday

This episode of Recount sets up a lot of dominoes. In particular, a lot of plot threads have now been set up for Riri. Hopefully you listened to our session 0 where Jordan gave a little bit of backstory on his Vampire. The two of us collaborated on some lore to drop in this episode to give more context as to why Riri has ended up in Whitfield Bay (which was the fun note from British vamparent Carmelle in this Ep). Something else that I think is valuable about the vamparents (who will show up a little later) is that they make Riri feel more like a teenager. She is being surveilled. There are expectations on her to perform less she bring shame to her family name.

I’ll be honest, when I GM, I am usually directly borrowing concepts from a particular piece of media (art is just stealing/recycling and I support this wholeheartedly). I hopped on Netflix one night and searched vampire movies for some Lore inspo and I watched Vampires vs the Bronx. The movie is a huge unsubtle metaphor about gentrification but with Vampires running the development corporation. It was fun and didn’t take itself too seriously, but this is where I borrowed Elder Vampire Ashes from.

I wanted this lore to capture something elitist because we get the nepotism from Anna and her family name, but the Vampire and its constant disregard for consent point to entitlement. That sense of “My needs are more important than yours”. I like comparing Anna and Riri’s actions to see how this comes across differently. They’re both manipulative but in very different ways. Also bringing vampire elitism into things furthers the divide between Team Declan and Team Anna. At its core, Recount is a story about power and privilege.
