MC Notes: Recount 01 + pics

BRAND NEW SEASON!

Hello esteemed Patrons,

Jillian your MC here with some thoughts on Episode 1. Let’s talk about the setting. We built it as a team by deciding what decade and geography excited us. That of course brought us to the fictional town of Whitfield Bay in the 90s, which I based off a real town in British Columbia where I had some relatives growing up. I have been thinking about a BC setting for about a year and a half now, since the last time I visited the province. Since BC was colonized by the British and the Spanish, I came up with a way of generating colonial town names using the following formula [last name of a high school English/Spanish teacher] + [Bay/Cove/Landing].

We are also using some experimental custom moves I wrote for the school election. I will publish them at the end of the campaign, but Patrons, perhaps you’d like sneak peaks at the development of that?

One other thing I want to talk about is how I handled sex in this campaign. I have found that in most public games, sex always fades to black. It’s not a thing a lot of people want to talk about with strangers or an audience. But I think as a result of fading to black and not mentioning anything about the sex, the importance of the moment is lost. I think there are other ways to abstract sex and difficult topics that allow players to reflect on the significance of the moment while respecting player safety. In this episode I asked Jordan for two adjectives to describe Riri’s steamy car adventure. He chose Tasty and Violent, and the rest is up to our imaginations. This also let me think about the consequences for “violent” which will come up later ;)

At the time of publishing this we have 6/8 episodes recorded so I can promise you a very exciting and dramatic campaign to come. Stay tuned!

BONUS: Here are some pics from my last BC trip

I think describing peripherals is a great idea too! The sensory environment around the characters is just as important! - Jillian

Jillian touched on this in her notes, but I really like the adjectives thing. Taking that extra moment helps us as players ascribe meaning in a very concrete way that I think really does something for relationship and character building. - Jorie

Oh the adjectives idea is really neat! What I like to do is describe things that are like, peripheral to the sex, like how the bed is just below the ray of moonlight that is the only thing litting the room, or the sounds of a party fading away, but your idea is way better for player agency!
