Firstly, those outside of Toronto might assume that the name of the Drake Casino is a reference to a certain famous musician. In fact, the Drake Hotel is a property that has existed in a few names and forms for over a century on Queen Street. Another fun casino-related fact? I've never been to one! If my narration of the various casino games played in this episode sound a little vague, well--now you know why!
Next, our heroes run into a host of familiar faces while at the Drake. Since a lot of the scenes in Lakeshore take place in confined or secretive spaces, I was excited to have the opportunity to call back to a few NPCs we've met so far. In some ways, each of these characters represents a regret or haunting from the past for this group. Ivy kicked off Kitty's journey away from her sheltered society life. Angela Whitcomb is another loose end that Susan and Nox will have to deal with. And of course, Mickey terrorized the whole group in turn at the Hardware.
Truthfully, I would have loved to bring back even more characters. Lakeshore has proven to have a pretty rich cast, and there are lots of balls in the air for these characters to juggle. Let's hope we have a chance to visit Philip, Jim Stevens, Ilyana, Ruth, Betty, and everyone else before it's too late!
Lastly, this episode finally reveals the identity of the mystery woman Nox saw all the way back in episode one: the singer Hazel, who performs at the Drake Casino. I had hoped she would pop up some time between then and now, since she seems to know more than she's letting on. The easiest way to find Hazel might have been to follow the lead on a certain matchbook found early in the campaign, classic detective-style. But that's the way the cookie crumbles, I suppose.
Until next time!
